McKinley Memorial Library offers a variety of programs that are FREE for children ages birth-12 years of age.
We offer several literacy programs for specific age groups and for families with kids of all ages, as well as recurring monthly programs. We also offer special programs on Saturday mornings throughout the year.

Mother Goose on the Loose

This lap-sit program for babies ages birth—24 months meets every Monday morning at 10:00 a.m. in the Auditorium from September--December and January—April.  Mother Goose on the Loose is an internationally acclaimed program designed to introduce books, music, and nursery rhymes to your child.

Music and Movement

Children ages 2—5 years can join library staff in the auditorium for 30 minutes of music and moving one Friday morning each month. Sessions run September—December and January—April. 

Registration is required and limited to 15 children per session.

Summer Reading Programs:


The library offers special Reading Incentive Programs, storytimes, and activities for kids in all age groups, from birth - 18 years, each year during the months of June-August. 

Read

The theme for this year’s summer reading program is Fizz! Boom! Read! Children will be encouraged to explore the wonderful world of science with exciting programs and reading incentives.

Join us for a night of fun at the Summer Reading Kick-Off Party for children and teens on Friday, June 13th from 6:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. outside on the library’s front lawn. Hey, Kid will be here to perform a FREE rock concert for kids! Imagination! Creative Arts Studios will be here with a fun canvas art project for teens to participate in. The first 200 kids and 50 teens to come and sign-up for the summer reading program at this event will receive a free goodie bag!

Bring a blanket or lawn chair because when the sun goes down, we will watch a movie on the lawn with FREE popcorn and pop for all!

No pre-registration is required to attend this event.

Wednesday Afternoon Activities: The library will offer the following FREE, science-themed activities for children in grades K—5th on Wednesday afternoons at 2:00 p.m. in the McKinley Auditorium.

All children attending these programs MUST be accompanied by an adult over the age of 18 years.

No registration is required to attend the following programs:

June 18th: Jungle Bob visits with a live animal show.

June 25th: Oh Wow! Of Youngstown visits with an interactive science show.

July 9th: Tom Phoolery visits with a fun Science-Is-Magic show.

July 16th: Mad Science of Northeast Ohio visits with an interactive Fizz! Boom! Class!

July 23rd: Science Fair Picnic—Children should work on a science related project of their choice throughout the summer and bring the finished project to this program to show and be judged. Winners will receive prizes. There will also be fun experiments to take part in and we will have a picnic with FREE hot dogs for all children in attendance.

July 30th: Science with Geauga-Trumbull Solid Waste Management District—Come learn about plastics and make your very own bouncy ball to keep.

Family Literacy Nights: The library will offer activities in the McKinley Auditorium at 6:00 p.m. on some Wednesday evenings throughout the summer for families with children of all ages to attend. No registration is required to attend these programs:

June – Family Building Blocks - Come hear a story, then work as a family to build a project out of random materials you are given. This program will meet on June 18th and June 25th

July – Family Story Walks  -  Come take a walk through a story…literally! Then, work as a family to make a related craft. This program will meet on July 16th and July 23rd.

Kids’ Finale Soda & Ice Cream Social: Join us for a Finale Party to close out the Summer Reading Program on Saturday, August 2nd at 2:00 p.m. in the auditorium.

All children who participate in the summer reading program are invited to attend with their caregiver(s). The Cooking Caravan will be here to present a fun program called “Tasty Tales” where they will show us how to make soda pop that the children will get to drink!

All children in attendance will also receive a FREE ice cream treat!

There will also be prize raffles for children in attendance, and the Summer Reading Grand Prize Drawings will take place.

No registration is required to attend this event.

READ FOR PRIZES THIS SUMMER!

“Read to Me”  Early Literacy Incentive Program: Children ages 18 months to 5 years are invited to sign up for this program.  Parents will be given an activity log to complete with their child. For each activity completed, the child will get to select a prize from the treasure box. After completing all 7 activities, the child will be entered into the Grand Prize Drawing that will be held at the end of the summer.

Independent Readers Program: Children in grades Kindergarten through 5th who can read independently are invited to join this program. Children will be given a goal of 30 books to read over the summer. Upon registering for this program, children will be given a reading log to keep track of the books they are reading. For every 5 books that a child reads, (s)he will receive a prize out of the treasure box. After reading all 30 books, the child will be entered into a grand prize drawing that will take place at the end of the summer.

Please note: Children who are reading large chapter books may count every 5 chapters they read as being equivalent to 1 book.

Children's Room & Programming Policies:

McKinley Memorial Library welcomes our even our youngest  patrons to use our facilities and services. That’s why we have created special spaces uniquely designed for children!

When visiting and attending library programs, it is important to be courteous and respectful of other library users.
Library staff encourages children and teens to  have fun exploring, but ask that you be mindful and follow library guidelines and policies. 

      • Children ages birth-5 years of age MUST be accompanied by an adult who is over 18 years of age at ALL times. If the child is in the Children's Room, then the adult MUST BE IN THE ROOM WITH THEM AT ALL TIMES.
      • Children ages 6-12 years of age may work independently in the library, but an adult who is over 18 years of age MUST  BE PRESENT IN THE BUILDING.
        Therefor, the child may work in the Children's Room given the adult is somewhere in the library.
      • Children and teens ages 13 years of age and older may be in the building without an adult and work independently. However, it is important that the child/teen adheres to all McKinley Memorial Library Policies.

When attending library programs:

      1. Children ages birth-5 years must have a parent/guardian over age 18 present with them at the program.
      2. Children ages 6-12 years may attend the program independently, but a parent/guardian over age 18 MUST remain on library grounds.
      3. Children ages 13 & Up may attend library programs independently.

When in the Children's Room:

      1. Please, parents, no shhhhsh-ing! We encourage the kids to talk and explore!
      2. Please be kind and courteous of other library patrons.
      3. Please clean up after yourself and/or your child (i.e., put puzzles and crayons away and place books on the return book cart when you are finished).
      4. Most importantly, explore, learn, discover and have fun using the library!
